Indices

In its most commonly traded form, an index is a value that represents the weighted average of a group of stocks. Financial indices operate worldwide, with the major financial centres being based in London, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. As different indices focus on different market sectors, they can be good indicators of the market condition of different countries and industries. For this reason, trading indices can be – and often is - referred to as ‘trading the markets’.

The location of major indices in countries around the globe means that, naturally, different indices have different trading hours. For example, while the UK’s FTSE 100 opens from 08:30am to 16:30pm GMT, the major US stock exchanges in New York trade from 09:30am until 16:00pm ET. The Hang Seng and Nikkei operate with an hour break between morning and afternoon, splitting daily sessions in two.

Daily Rolling Index Trading

Daily Rolling Index Trading

Daily Rolling Index Trading

With ETX Capital, platform users can access Daily Rolling Trading on the major financial indices, allowing you to take positions on indices after their closing hours. This is possible because the spreads offered by brokerages like ETX Capital are based on future rather than present index values. Brokers calculate market movements during an index’s closing hours by estimating the level at which it will trade when the market re-opens.

As daily rolling trading is not based on an index’s actual movement, outside of trading hours the spreads offered by brokers are slightly wider. Traders should also keep in mind that rolling daily contracts incur an overnight charge for each day the trade remains open.
